Description

The Large Magellanic Cloud is replete with Hydrogen, Sulphur and Oxygen and is a wonderful source of objects to target for narrowband imaging. This field is located in the north east corner of the LMC and includes many catalogued deep sky objects including NGC 2004, the small globular cluster in the  centre of the field.

I published an RGB_HOO version of this image in March 2022  and promptly forgot at the time that I had SII data collected with a view to doing a full narrowband version. This rendition includes the SII, OII and Ha data along with RGB stars (donated from the March 2022 processing ). As it had been some time since I had processed an SHO narrowband image, I decided to do a little research into the latest tools in Pixinsight that can be applied to the processing of narrowband images. In doing so I bumped into the Foraxx palette methodology (see thecoldestnights.com) and a  supporting script developed by Paul Hancock. The idea of the Foraxx palette methodology is to apply a pixel by pixel mixing algorithm when combining the three channels such that differences in relative signal strengths between the channels can be compensated for. The basic workflow is to create three stretched starless images for the SII, Ha and OIII channels and then combine them using the Foraxx palette utility script in Pixinsight. This provides an excellent starting point for further processing.

A mouse over has been applied which helps to show the details of the nebulosity without the stars present.

Edit: Pleased to announce that this image was awarded AAPOD2 image of the day for 3 November 2023
